Groundwork, in partnership with the London Borough of Camden and local residents have transformed two courtyards in the Curnock Street Estate, Camden. Groundwork worked with residents for a number of years to develop the underused courtyards on the estate into community gardens and play areas.
Following an estate wide consultation undertaken by
Groundwork between January and March 2003, a number of key
recommendations and improvements were suggested for the open
spaces. Broken paving, poor lighting and number of hidden corners
meant that the courtyard areas were under-used, felt unsafe and had
been vandalised. Residents were also concerned about anti-social
behaviour and were keen to know how the space could be improved and
made far more secure.
Two courtyards have now been improved. The scope of the works
involved removal of the existing fenced play area and installing
paving, lighting, grass and shrubs. Work also included the
installation of new fenced play area, paving, lighting, grass,
shrubs, benches and bins.
