Groundwork was commissioned in 2004 to carry out a community
consultation exercise with residents on Longmoore Gardens Estate in
Westminster and as a result of this work, Churton Street routeway
was identified as an area that had problems with antisocial
behaviour and street drinking. Local people were keen to see the
area redesigned in a way that addressed these issues as well as
making the routeway attractive and safe.
In consultation with residents, Groundwork drew up sketch designs to open the area, instal new surfacing, lighting, trees and planting. A bamboo screen shields the toilet block from view and new bollards have been installed to prevent illegal parking.
A launch event was held on in October 2006 where the Deputy Mayor, Cllr Alan Bradley, officially opened the routeway. A steel band, face painter and giant games entertained the residents.
Partners and funders for the project were CityWest Homes,
Westminster City Council, Cross River Partnership and South
Westminster Neighbourhood Renewal Partnership.
